The sheen on the ‘social networking’ phenomenon seems to be rubbing off slightly as people come to realize that these companies—shock! horror!—want to make money from their users in order to stay afloat. This has been particularly prominent with Facebook’s new ‘Beacon’ application, which records everything that a user buys over the Web and then advertises it to the world via the user’s profile as a quasi-recommendation of the individual products.
